About

Thomas Gionis is an accomplished television director, enthusiastic teacher, and community servant from Weston, Connecticut. With a passion for television and new media, he strives to inspire and motivate young adults interested in a media career.

While breaking into the industry, one often described by Tom Gionis as an inverted pyramid at the time. Once you made it through the narrow funnel of entry, the expansion and growth was endless. Gionis thought an advanced degree might help him through the door, so he completed his MBA in Marketing. That degree was one of his best educational experiences, in that he applied what he learned all through his life. But, of course, Tom was a TV producer, not a financier, so he never strayed far from his industry. His MBA was awarded on the completion of his thesis entitled: “The Future of Sports Programming and New Media Technology”.

Humble Beginnings

Thomas Gionis is a baby boomer, born in Long Island, New York. He was raised by his grandparents, who instilled faith and family values in him. His grandparents also encouraged generosity and a willingness to help others, which became a part of Tom’s daily life. After seeing the Tonight Show live at 30 Rock featuring Johnny Carson, Thomas became hooked on television and a lifelong passion was born.

Thomas accepted a scholarship to play collegiate football after graduating from high school. A knee injury cut his athletic career short and he moved on to attend New York University, earning a BFA degree in Film and Television production. His senior film, a documentary entitled “East of the Apple,” was sponsored by the Long Island Tourism Commission as a historic, panoramic travelogue of Long Island.

After graduating from NYU, he moved on to obtain his MBA from Hofstra University with his thesis “Television Programming and New Media Technologies.”

Thomas Gionis’ Television Experience

After completing his MBA, Thomas Gionis worked as an independent contractor at NBC. He was assigned to many different programs including “The Today Show,” WNBC, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and several sporting events. He also worked as a contractor for IBM at this time and helped develop marketing and communications material, both print form and electronic media. He went on to be a part of the launch team for Fox News, contributing to a variety of programs throughout the day. Thomas is well known for his time spent directing the cast and crew of NHL on Versus, which was a precursor to NHL on NBC. To this day, Thomas enjoys looking himself up on IMDB and seeing his credit as the director of the program.

Today, Thomas Gionis is evaluating his next chapter. He works as an adjunct professor at Fairfield and Hofstra Universities. He also is exploring the ways that new media can be shared and enjoyed, having recently travelled to Greece and sharing his experiences on YouTube, showcasing the mobile media industry. Thomas also recently received an Excellence Award for the completion of Emergency Response Team Training and is a certified FEMA member.

Accomplished television director, enthusiastic mentor and passionate (giver) are just a few of the ways you could describe Tom Gionis, of Weston CT.  Looking back on his career and his life, Tom has plenty to be proud of, but his focus remains on the future.

Imagine the horror of watching a massive tornado making its way towards your neighborhood, a merciless flood overtaking the roadways, or a wall of fire closing in on your home. These aren’t farfetched – in fact, the number of devastating natural disasters are on the rise and millions of people face them every year.

For six decades Tom has worked on major network and broadcast cable news and sports productions. Has taught at the university level and continues to write, produce and create content on the internet.

Looking back on his career and his life, Tom has plenty to be proud of, but his focus remains on the future.
